Keith: “Music saved my life, literally”

Keith Urban indeed told that to an audience of students and supporters of the W.O. Smith school, which gives music lessons to kids from low-income families.

Keith was the celeb speaker at a groundbreaking for the school’s new location, an old tire center at 8th and Edgehill. It’ll be open in 11 months, and Keith has been a quiet financial backer for about six years.

He told the kids that he got started with free music lessons. Seems his parents owned a store in his native Australia and a guitar teacher came in and asked if she could put up signs in the store advertising lessons from her. She offered to pay to put up those signs.

But the Urbans had a better idea: “If you teach our son, you can put the ad in the window for free.”

Keith said music is a way for teens to express themselves.

“Everybody else was at the oval playing football,” he said. “I was the kid in the music room playing piano, playing guitar.”

He firmly believes that he’s headed for a better life. “I desire to be a good husband, a good father and a relevant artist,” Keith declares.
